In Type 1 diabetes, there's absolute deficiency of insulin. This means that the pancreas is failing to produce insulin. Generally this form of diabetes manifests in childhood or teenage years.
Patients with Type 1 diabetes will require insulin from the point of diagnosis in order to survive and avoid serious illness. Type 1 diabetes is caused by the body's own immune system attacking cells of the pancreas. No one is exactly sure why this happens. But we do know that unlike Type 2 diabetes it's not primarily related to obesity, diet or a sedentary lifestyle. Only 5%-10% of patients with diabetes have type 1 diabetes.
