Type 2 is by far the most common type of diabetes. It general develops in adulthood and can be associated with having a genetic tendency towards the illness, being overweight, or having a sedentary lifestyle. Type 2 diabetes is caused by a relative deficiency in the production of insulin and that insulin being ineffective in the body. It's also associated with a decreased effectiveness of this hormone in the cells of the body. Although this condition has historically been associated with adults, there's an increasing number of children being diagnosed due to the rising rates of childhood obesity.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a progressive condition. Lifestyle measures may be able to control the condition at the beginning of diagnosis but over time most patients will progress to require a single or multiple oral medications and in some instances insulin.

It is estimated that by the time Type 2 diabetes is diagnosed, about 50% of the insulin producing capacity of the pancreas has already been lost. This decreases by approximately 3% per year thereafter. Therefore, one can see how someone diagnosed with diabetes may need progressively aggressive treatment over time. If you have Type 2 diabetes, or are concerned that you may be at risk of developing it, you can complete our online screening tool or make an appointment to see our team.
